Member for Cook Cynthia Lui calls on the Federal government to match $20m for seawall and flood mitigation work on five islands in the Torres Strait.
“The Palaszczuk government committed an additional $20 million for seawall and flood mitigation work on five islands in the Torres Strait, conditional on the funding being matched by the Federal Government,” Ms Lui said
The Member for Cook recently visited Boigu Island and met with Cr Dimas Toby and community members who raised the impact and devastation of climate change and inspected the existing infrastructure that is not coping and meeting community need.
“I met with community members on Boigu Island who are worried sick about the effects of climate change because it’s a serious threat to their families and homes.”
“That is why I am calling on the Federal government to match $20m in funding for seawall and flood mitigation work on five islands. All our communities should feel safe and secure and it’s a responsibility of all levels of government.”
“The Queensland Government money is in the budget, and is just waiting on the Federal Government to match it.”
“The Federal government needs to listen to the pleas of our communities in the Torres Strait and act in accordance.”
