Fifteen sporting and community groups in the Cook electorate will benefit from the $13.7 million distributed as part of Round 96 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the groups in her electorate would share $343,841 worth of funding.
“In this latest round of funding announced today, community groups including Aurukun and Cooktown state schools, Central Cape Rugby League Club and Weipa BMX Club will benefit from grants that will help them purchase equipment and improve their facilities and services,” Ms Lui said.
“The Gambling Community Benefit Fund is the state’s largest one-off grants program and provides about $53 million a year to our vital community groups.
“In Cook, Mossman Port Douglas Senior Rugby Club will receive $20,100 to install lighting and a range hood, Douglas Shire Branch Little Athletics Centre will get $35,000 to build a new shed, and Bamanga Bubu Ngadimunku Aboriginal Corporation will receive $23,239 to upgrade its nursery.
“These are vital injections of funding for groups which are often the soul of our community,” Ms Lui said.
“The Gambling Community Benefit Fund is helping keep our sporting clubs and community groups alive – providing those items that aren’t necessarily easy to raise funds for but which are vital to their function.”
Ms Lui said community groups were vital to the region.
“It is wonderful to see these groups receiving funds that will allow them to improve the services they provide to the local community.”
The GCBF grants are worth between $500 and $35,000 and applications are open to not-for-profit, community-based organisations. There are four rounds a year.
Applications are now open for Round 98, closing on August 31.
“August 31 is also the closing date for Expressions of Interest for our special Commemorative grants to mark the 25th year of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund in 2019,” Ms Lui said.
“For that special, extra round in 2019, we will offer much larger grants - 10 x $100,000 grants, and one grant of $250,000.
“That amount of funding would be a game changer for most community groups and I’d encourage organisations to get their Expressions of Interest in by the looming deadline of August 31.
