The Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui is pleased the next steps have been taken in the journey to secure a new home for Paws and Claws in the Douglas Shire.
The President of the Association of Homeless Animals Society and Boarding Kennels Inc, Michael Kerr has said that Paws and Claws have submitted a Development Application to the Douglas Shire Council for the former LOTSA Printing Factory on Teamsters Drive in Craiglie.
Ms Lui said, “The Palaszczuk Government has committed $300,000 towards the acquisition of land for a new Paws and Claws animal shelter and boarding kennel, which has been welcomed by the Douglas Shire Council and of course, Paws and Claws.”
“The original commitment had a requirement that it was to be used prior to the end of the last financial year and so I was very pleased that the Minister agreed to my request for the funds to be rolled over into this financial year. This allowed the negotiations that the Society were involved in to proceed without the time pressure that the looming end of financial year posed.
“It has been a 10 year long journey for Paws and Claws to secure a final site for the facility, which is the only shelter for homeless animals in the Douglas Shire,” Ms Lui said.
“This is an enormously important issue for the community and no-one wants to see animals homeless or dumped because of a lack of accommodation.”
“Paws and Claws has funds to purchase the property and are very appreciative of the Palaszczuk government’s contribution. We are also dependent on fundraising to convert the property into a ‘state of the art’ facility,” Mr Kerr said.
Ms Lui said, “I strongly encourage community members to continue to donate generously to Paws and Claws to ensure the best outcomes for surrendered and abandoned animals in the Douglas Shire.”
