The Palaszczuk Government will deliver 6 new Water Police boats to the Cape York region.
The new 5.5 metre vessels are faster and better equipped than the existing vessels and will ensure police resources in the state’s most northern area are cutting edge.
Cook MP Cynthia Lui says the investment reflects the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to regional Queensland.
“This government’s philosophy is it doesn’t matter where you live in this great state of ours you are entitled to a proper level of police services.
“The new boats will service various communities in Cape York,” the Member for Cook said.
New boats will be delivered to Pormpuraaw, Weipa, Lockhart River, Aurukun, Bamaga and Cooktown.
Police Minister Mark Ryan said the Palaszczuk Government is ensuring police have up-to-date equipment right across the state.
“I visited Thursday Island and travelled on a Water Police vessel.
“I understand how critical they are to policing the communities in our state’s most northern region.
“The Palaszczuk Government is investing $5.4 million this year in our Water Police fleet.
“New boats for Redland Bay region, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Mooloolaba, Hervey Bay, Sarina and more all the way to the Cape.
“The new vessels we are delivering are either faster or have a greater range than the vessels they are replacing.
“The Palaszczuk Government will always ensure the Queensland Police Service has the resources it needs to get the job done,” Minister Ryan said.
