The sustainable management of the Mitchell regions water catchment has prompted a proposed nine-year extension of the Mitchell Water Plan.
Water Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the Queensland Government is inviting North Queensland water users to have their say on the proposed extension of the Mitchell Water Plan.
“As part of the proposed extension we are seeking feedback from communities and industry in the Mitchell catchments - from the people who know best about their water,” Dr Lynham said.
“Latest figures indicate there is significant spare water within the Mitchell area which brings opportunities for new and sustainable developments.
“The Mitchell plan area includes one of the largest flowing rivers in the state, the Mitchell river, accounting for some 8 per cent of Queensland’s total surface water runoff.
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the Mitchell, Lynd, Walsh, Alice and Palmer rivers and their tributaries made the region unique.
“The wet season revives the natural ecosystem, supports its grazing industry and triggers prawn and barramundi breeding, during the dry season, many thousands of tourists visit the area.
“While this is a great news to see the system is working, we would like to offer the public an opportunity to make submissions regarding the plan’s extension,’’ Ms Lui said.
Dr Lynham said that under current arrangements, the plan was due to expire on 1 September 2018 but as a result of the plan’s success and existing feedback, we are proposing to extend the plan for an additional nine years.
“It is important to note we can’t be complacent, any extension will not hinder the government from reviewing or amending the plan at any time in the future should the circumstances change.
“My department will continue to monitor the ongoing health and supply of water in the Mitchell System. This includes the compulsory five yearly reporting on the Plan’s effectiveness. Effective management of the Mitchell region’s water is vital to agricultural development and the environment.”
