Member for Cook Cynthia Lui today congratulated Far North Queensland winners in the state’s annual Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools as she celebrated two winners from her electorate.
Ms Lui said it was great that Mossman State School and Mount Molloy State School had been recognised in Queensland’s most prestigious educational awards.
“It is fantastic to congratulate the nine winners, as well as the three commendation recipients from the Far North Queensland region for demonstrating excellence in education, innovation and leadership,” she said.
“I am particularly pleased to see Mossman State School selected for its work in early and primary years learning while Mount Molloy State School has been recognised for community engagement.
“These are great honours and are richly deserved.”
Speaker of the Queensland Parliament and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said it was a significant achievement for all the Far North Schools that had won or been commended.
“They are being recognised for their contribution to education and their communities and I understand the regional judging team had a difficult task because the quality of submissions from competing schools was very high,” he said.
Mr Pitt said it was great to see Woree State School named the Far North School of the Year.
Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said the communities at Smithfield State High School and Kuranda District State College should be very proud of their wins while Member for Cairns Michael Healy said he was delighted Balaclava State School had taken out the award for excellence in Indigenous education.
Education Minister Grace Grace said the regional winners were chosen from 118 submissions that involved more than 70,000 students across the state in the 19th year of the program.
“I am continually impressed with the commitment of our schools to improve learning outcomes for Queensland students,” the Minister said.
“It is evident that local educators are incredibly passionate about implementing the highest standards of innovative teaching and learning practices.
“Each regional award winner will receive a $1000 development grant and each regional commendation recipient will receive a $500 grant which will further support the delivery of these wonderful education programs and initiatives.”
This prize pool is supported by major sponsors Education Queensland International, Griffith University, Network Ten, Remserv, QSuper, QUT, Queensland Teachers’ Union, Teachers Health, Teachers Mutual Bank and University of Southern Queensland.
“It is important that we recognise the great work that our educators are doing day to day to ensure that Queensland continues to be at the forefront of new education practices,” Minister Grace said.
“I wish the regional award winners well as they compete in the next round of the Showcase Awards and potentially become state finalists.”
State finalists will be announced on 30 July 2018 and state award winners will be announced at the Showcase Awards Gala Dinner in Brisbane on Friday 26 October 2018, coinciding with Queensland’s celebration of World Teachers’ Day.
