Minister for Communities and Minister for Disability Services and Seniors The Honourable Coralee O'Rourke
The search is on for a local builder to construct the new $4 million (excluding GST) community centre on Thursday Island, with the building contract for the project now open to tender.
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui today (14 October) announced the opening of the tender, highlighting the local focus of the project’s construction.
“This will be a select tender of five local builders with experience delivering projects of this type and size in this region,” Ms Lui said.
“We expect this project will create around 15 full-time equivalent jobs for local people here in the Torres Strait during construction.
“This project includes the demolition of the existing building at 156 Douglas Street and the construction of the new centre.
“The new Thursday Island Community Centre will be a purpose-built facility to deliver essential community supports and services, and programs and activities for local people, including young people.”
The opening of the tender for the new community centre follows extensive community consultation and the release of the concept plan earlier in this year.
The tender is expected to be awarded to the successful building contractor later this month.
Minister for Communities Coralee O’Rourke said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to creating thriving communities by delivering quality community services through the state’s network of 124 neighbourhood and community centres.
“Projects such as the Thursday Island Community Centre will help us create thriving communities where Queenslanders, regardless of their personal circumstances, are able to participate and be included in their communities, be resilient and enjoy social and economic wellbeing,” she said.
“I’d like to thank the Torres Shire Council and Torres Strait Regional Council, as well as the Torres Strait community for their support of this fantastic project.”
