Cook locals will benefit from hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding from the Palaszczuk Government for sport and fitness programs as part of a Commonwealth Games legacy initiative.
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui today announced more than $800,000 in grants, funded by the Federal Government and delivered under the Queensland Government’s Embracing 2018 Legacy Program, had been awarded to councils across Queensland, including Douglas Shire Council and Mapoon Aboriginal Council.
“The Game On Queensland grants will enable councils to provide healthy and active initiatives in the lead-up to, during and after the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games,” she said.
“The Commonwealth Games is about so much more than 11 days of sport. Our Embracing 2018 Legacy Program is all about making sure all Queenslanders continue to benefit from the Games long after the event in April next year.
“This is an example of the Games providing a platform to encourage communities to lead active healthy lives that will benefit them for years to come “I’m proud to be part of a Labor government that’s delivering grants initiatives like this as part of the Commonwealth Games – an event that will deliver around $4 billion to our great state.”
Ms Lui said a total of 38 projects had received funding across the state through the Game On program.
Douglas Shire Council has received a grant to deliver ‘Game on DS2018 Come and Try and EVEN MORE Active Games in the Park! she said.
“Mapoon Aboriginal Council received a grant to deliver ‘Fitness and Fun for All Ages’.
“I’m so happy we’ve been able to give councils the ability to expand their health and fitness initiatives to inspire people to move more and value their health.
Federal Minister for Sport, Senator Bridget McKenzie said the local councils receiving the Game On Queensland grants will now have the ability to provide new and exciting opportunities that engage communities in sport and physical active programs and events.
“Families in these communities will now be able to take part is festivals and events incorporating a range of physical activities that encourage participation. It could be either casual sport or exercise or something more structured like a sporting competition,” Minister McKenzie said.
“The councils will have the freedom to tailor to the needs of their communities and the great thing about this program is that it is about having a go and getting active, no matter what your ability.
“The Turnbull Government is proud to support Game On as part of the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program. Embracing 2018 encourages active and healthy living, not just in Queensland communities but across Australia.”
