LIGHT is at the end of the tunnel for Daintree households.
The Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui, said Daintree residents would receive a similar payment to the Queensland Government’s electricity rebate after she made representations to the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, Anthony Lynham.
"Households can expect to receive the payment in coming weeks," Ms Lui said.
“The Palaszczuk Labor Government initially introduced the one-off rebate as part of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We recognised that families were doing it tough with some breadwinners losing their jobs at least temporarily.
“The rebate was a way of giving households some breathing space during the pandemic - $200 for each household and $500 for small to medium businesses that consume less than 100,000 kilowatt hours annually.
“The Daintree community is off the power grid and householders in the area did not receive the benefit.
“I received representations from several residents and businesses in the area.
“It seemed a shame to me that they should miss out, so I went to bat for them.
“Everyone has been impacted economically during the pandemic.”
Minister Lynham took on board Ms Lui’s strong advocacy on behalf of the Daintree residents.
“I am grateful the minister has given the community a sympathetic hearing,” she said.
