THE official opening of the new $2 million Mareeba Ambulance Station today meets a key election commitment from the Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui.
Ms Lui said in officially opening the new and modern centre to help Mareeba’s paramedics to deliver the best possible service to the community.
“The building they have been operating out of for the past 54 years is no longer fit for purpose,” she said.
“What was state-of-the-art in 1966 is no longer good enough for a modern ambulance service operating with bigger and better vehicles and life-saving equipment.”
The new station includes a four-bay plant room, patient care store, office space, day room, a write-up area, multifunctional rest and study rooms that can double as training space, and associated staff amenities.
“I thank Mareeba’s many ambulance officers for their dedicated service over the past 50 years and the 17 serving paramedics for their patience while I pushed for the new centre for them,” Ms Lui said.
“The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need for the Palaszczuk Labor Government to invest heavily in frontline health services in regional Queensland.”
The successful tenderer, H.C Building and Construction, carried out the first concrete pour for the plantroom in May with the main station slab poured soon afterwards.
“While the pandemic has been a challenge for employers and employees, the construction phase has provided seven local jobs,” Ms Lui said.
“Mareeba’s paramedics deserve the new state-of-the-art facility to help them deliver the best possible service to the Mareeba region.”
