NORTHERN Peninsula Area State College will be “cooking with gas” after the Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui, won funding to upgrade its Home Economics classroom.
Ms Lui recently visited the college’s Senior Campus with Regional Development and Manufacturing Minister Glenn Butcher where they were advised it had applied for funding under the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s School Subsidy Scheme.
“I am pleased to announce that the government will provide the $261,000 in funding to make the upgrade a reality,” she said.
“The Home Economics upgrade has been one of the college’s key priorities and it’s great to see this funding come through.
“We undertook to advocate strongly for this upgrade.”
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Education Minister Grace Grace recently announced more than $9.7 million in funding upgrades and refurbishments at schools in the Cook electorate.
This was part of $220 millioon to help schools statewide to carry out new projects, minor works and upgrades.
“These building projects will support 720 local construction jobs across Queensland,” Ms Lui said.
“Communities have been doing it tough during the COVID-19 pandemic, including schools, their staff, students and parents.
“Job creation is an important part of Queensland’s plan for economic recovery work will be kept local.
“I encourage schools to engage local businesses where possible to complete maintenance works and smaller jobs.”
She said interested trades people and contractors should contact the Business Manager in schools located in their local area.
For larger projects, contractors are encouraged to register with QTenders for upcoming opportunities.
The projects will maintain a consistent pipeline of construction work supporting the economic recovery from COVID-19.
Other schools in the Cook electorate to receive funding are as follows.
- Aurukun State School, $220,000, to create better teaching walls in the teaching block, replace windows and create cross-flow ventilation across the upper classrooms.
- Cooktown State School, $136,000, up upgrade the prep playground.
- Kowanyama State School, $400,000, to remediate school facilities, and to renew a teaching block and address security issues.
- Lockhart State School, $3.15 million, for amenities and teaching spaces and to renew administration and learning support spaces.
- Mossman State High School, $506,000, costs towards Manual Arts upgrade.
- Mossman State School, $94,000, upgrade to tennis courts.
- Tagai State College, $1.9 million, for upgrades at its Malu Kiwai, Mer, Poruma and Saibai campuses.
- Wonga Beach State School, $150,000, for corrosive treatment.
A total amount of $2.891 million will be spent on minor works and maintenance at schools across the Cook electorate.
