CYNTHIA LUI
MEMBER FOR COOK
Media Release
Weipa boaties are set to welcome additional Palaszczuk Government funding for a $3 million prompt, one-stop solution to their calls for a suitable pontoon upgrade.
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the new funding would ensure the upgraded pontoon provided weather protection for the nearby boat ramp.
"I’ve listened to the community, and made sure their voices were heard with TMR – and this outcome is a huge benefit for all," Mr Bailey said.
"With the additional funding, TMR has managed to eliminate the need for a two-stage process and requirements for future extensions.
"The new pontoon system will also provide extended wave attenuation to the nearby boat ramp which local boaties were anxious to see included in the project.
"The pontoon will provide sheltered berthing space for about five boats and will be suitable for deep draft vessels and visiting yachts.
"Outside berths will still be usable in good conditions."
Ms Lui said the upgraded pontoon would address safety concerns raised by recreational and commercial users after it was first installed in late 2015.
"Tenders for the design-and-construct contract for the new pontoon based on the original design concept closed on 15 September.
TMR requested the shortlisted tenderers to quote on the revised design concept from the recent community meeting and these were received on 23 September.
“Evaluation of the shortlisted tenders is now being finalised and a contract should be awarded in the next few weeks.
