MORE than $7 million will flow into the Cook electorate for upgrades at schools in the Torres Strait and Cape York.
The Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui, this was good news following the expenditure of $57.34 million on schools around her vast electorate in the past three years.
“Aurukun State School will receive $3 million for a brand new administration block,” Ms Lui said.
“The Coen campus of the Cape York Aboriginal Australian Academy will get a new amenities block as well with funding of $1.1 million.
“Tagai State College will receive a total of $2.3 million across four campuses.
“Funding of $1.7 million will replace the amenities block at the primary school campus on Thursday Island and $180,000 will provide equitable access at the secondary campus on TI.
“The Warraber Island and Yorke Island campuses will receive $120,000 and $300,000 for improvements to outdoor play spaces at their respective kindergartens.
“Similar upgrades will made at the Western Cape College’s kindy at Mapoon with $450,000 in funding.”
The Northern Peninsula Area College will receive $240,000 to refurbish the administration area at its junior campus in Bamaga.
"I have focused on investing in schools and education as an important part of my plan to build stronger communities in the Cook electorate.
"Schools help build capacity in communities by preparing young people for higher education and helping them achieve the qualifications they need for the jobs they want.
“Staff deserve the best possible workplace conditions and students need the best quality facilities in which to flourish.
Ms Lui said the Newman-Frecklington LNP government sacked 500 teachers and closed down schools and now planned to cut 650 teaching jobs to fund Deb Frecklington’s election commitments,” she said.
“The community wants nothing less than the best possible outcomes for their local schools no matter where they live in Queensland,” she said.
The funding is part of a $1 billion Great Schools, Great Future education policy to modernise schools and support more than 3100 local construction jobs across Queensland.
Students and teachers at Far North Queensland schools will benefit from 32 projects, supporting local tradies during the economic recovery from COVID-19.
