Cynthia Lui MP
Member for Cook

THE gradual sealing of the section of the Burke Developmental Rd (BDR) that runs through the Cook electorate is a priority for the Labor Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui.
Ms Lui said the works achieved in her past term demonstrated her ongoing commitment to help fully seal this important link between the agricultural areas of outback Queensland with coastal markets and ports.
“The Palaszczuk Labor Government released almost $10 million in extra funding for the road as part the Palaszczuk Government’s $400 million COVID-19 roads package,” she said.
“The new funding will seal new sections of the road between Normanton and Dimbulah.
“This followed the completion in December last year of a $4.7 million upgrade for Burke Developmental Road between Chillagoe and Almaden.
The 1035km Burke Developmental Rd between Cloncurry and Dimbulah runs partially through the electorate of Cook from the Staaten River to Dimbulah.
Ms Lui said sealing the developmental route would improve safety and productivity for tourists, recreation vehicles and the freight industry, making it easier and quicker to move goods and produce around the State.
“This accelerated investment supports jobs during construction,” she said. “This is part of the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s clear plan for economic recovery in our regions.”
The Butcher Creek bridge between Cloncurry and Normanton is being replaced with another funding boost of $10.7 million.
Ms Lui said she will continue to advocate for these projects, if elected as the Member for Cook in the upcoming state election.
“I would hate to see this work undone if the LNP is elected with its plans to cut public services and slash important infrastructure projects.
“These substantial roadworks deliver job support and creation in the short term and economic development in the long term.
“These kind of big-spending projects are especially important now as we negotiate our way through the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The Government had allocated $5.8 million under its Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program 2019–20 to 2022–23 to seal another 2.5km section of the section between Chillagoe and Almaden.
"Mareeba Shire Council is undertaking this construction work supporting 19 jobs – only Labor Government’s deliver better jobs for our locals.”
