The Pormpur Panthu Aboriginal Corporation is one of five Queensland organisations which will share in $53,000 to help raise awareness about institutional child abuse and promote truth, healing and reconciliation.
The 2020-21 Truth, Healing and Reconciliation grants program aims to acknowledge and raise awareness of institutional child abuse, support those with lived experiences to speak out, and research the impact of this form of abuse.
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui today congratulated Pormpur Panthu on their successful bid for funding under the 2021 grants program.
“Pormpur Panthu will receive $10,000 to deliver a Pormpuraaw Truth, Healing and Reconciliation Health Promotion Campaign which will make sure the vulnerable Aboriginal children of the past are supported to speak their truth about the abuse they experienced and heal in a way that is both culturally and physically safe,” she said.
“One of the messages that came out of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was that we must actively listen to those with lived experiences and acknowledge their stories,” she said.
“This project, along with the other four projects taking place around the state, will help to reveal the truth of what happened to children, encourage healing and work towards reconciliation in Queensland.”
The grants program, delivered by the Department of Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs, was launched on 31 May 2019 as part of the Queensland Government’s implementation of the recommendations from the Royal Commission.
The Truth, Healing and Reconciliation Taskforce, chaired by Mr Bob Atkinson AO APM, is currently travelling throughout the state hosting a series of forums to provide information on the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and the National Redress Scheme.
Minister for Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs said the forums were another opportunity for Queenslanders to share their opinions, thoughts and feedback on the implementation of the Royal Commission recommendations in Queensland.
“The taskforce’s vision is for a Queensland where children are protected, safe and supported to reach their full potential,” she said.
“I think these grants are an important part of that process to raise awareness, drive real change and bring about justice and healing for people with lived experiences of child abuse across Queensland.”
