More than 700 community groups in Queensland, including 53 in Far North Queensland, will benefit from $14.1 million worth of grants as part of Round 97 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.
Speaker of the Queensland Parliament and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said community groups in Far North Queensland would share in more than $1 million worth of funding.
“In this latest round of funding announced today, local sporting clubs and groups were big winners with Barrier Coast Archery, Cairns Mudcrabs Masters Swimming Club and Edmonton & District Pony & Horse Club benefiting from grants that will help them improve their facilities,” Mr Pitt said.
“This is exciting news for these groups and allows them to fund projects that would have otherwise been out of reach.
Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said other community groups didn’t miss out either with the Douglas Shire Meals on Wheels and the Torres Strait Aged Care Association also sharing in the spoils.
“It is wonderful to see these groups receiving funds that will allow them to improve the services they provide to the local community,” Ms Lui said
Member for Barron River Craig Crawford said these groups are the backbone of the community and the Palaszczuk Government is committed to supporting them as much as possible.
“I want to congratulate the Barron Valley Gymnastics Club, Kuranda Men’s Shed and the other recipients who are the cornerstone of our local communities.
Member for Cairns Michael Healy added successful groups such as ARC Disability Services and Ozcare’s Cairns Drug and Alcohol Residential Recover Service provide places for locals to go and make contributions to not only the groups itself but the wider community.
“The Gambling Community Benefit Fund is the state’s largest one-off grants program and provides about $53 million a year to our vital community groups,” Mr Healy said.
